Some Linux people see the hidden enemy Windows everywhere, like the
McCarthy-ites in 50s America saw reds under every bed.

Dir was a DOS command before it was a Windows command, and in DOS they were
called directories. But anyway that is completely missing the point. If
you re-read my original post, I do not mention Windows anywhere in the
paragraph I discussed this. I merely said that dir is a more obvious
abbreviation for directory than ls is for list.

Actually, I was irritated by the change from directories to folders. It's
just like that pointless makeover to the GUI every time they release a new
version, which always means that you have to waste time finding out where
all the controls are again. Suppose they did that to cars? It's bad enough
setting the windscreen washers going instead of dipping the lights in an
unfamiliar car, but can you imagine what would happen if they changed
*everything* as much as MS does?
