I've installed an Apollo P2200 (HP's discount brand a few years ago) and
a Brother laser printer with no difficulty at all - when I added the
Brother on one machine of my three node network, CUPS automatically
installed it on the other two. I've been using Epson USB scanners with no
difficulty for about three years. I'm currently running Mandrake 10.1OE
on two computers and Gentoo (stage one install) on my mini-itx box.

It was not Linux that ran like ***. If it was too slow for you, your
problem was the choice of desktop - KDE and Gnome are a little slow on
equipment that slow (although I don't really find it objectionable on my
old Compaq with 533mhz K6). Have you tried one of the 'lighter' desktops -
like xfce or fluxbox? You'll find it's a lot faster. I installed 'Damn
Small Linux' with fluxbox on a 233mhz P2 recently and it's not too bad.
This machine is being used at a local library for accessing the online
card catalog, and not much else.
