fwiw
all of my installs as newb have been network connected through out the
install (lan and dsl modem/router), and at the (install) stage of
confirming the configuration I have usually decided to configure the
network card to a fixed IP, and set the default gateway (typical
192.168.1.1) & dns addresses. Things have worked very smoothly with
immediate internet connection. It rather took me by surprise at first. I
had been used to installing 'doze machines - a lot less elegant.

I have also found that suse, almost by default, installs into dual boot
with 'doze, and is no problem. Once I discovered this - by accident
actually - again as a newb I was surprised - I did not want the HD
contetns or OS to be preserved - I was more careful and systematic in
scandisk and defrag on the 'doze PC/s first, after appropriate backup.
But it has always worked for me on a number of installls. (In case you
wondered I am translating life to suse at the moment so dual boot is a
useful ploy)
