That does sound a problem with lack of lba support or lba not
turned on, say, in bios. Despite the drive being recognized,
have you made that setting in bios? Perhaps a complete manual
setup for the drive? It might also be possible to pass some kind
of boot parameter in Grub or Lilo to gain os/level lba support
(rtfm for specifics,) assuming it's not a hardware limitation.

Did you ever get the drive up and working in Linux? How, if
so? I have had difficulty with WD's and Seagates, where Maxtors
of >= size worked, with the same cables, chipsets, simliar settings,
etc. The cure I found was to install the drive on a native ATA 133
controller, instead of the ATA100 raid controller, which didn't
support drive > 120GB. (no driver update forthcoming from HTP,
either...may be a hardware constraint?)
