For a college, Debian is best. It is totally non-commercial and has full
source code for every package. Other main distributions may have some non-free
components or some components without source, and it is inevitable that you
will move to Debian sooner or later.
I recommend Debian Sarge with a 2.6.x kernel.
I use Debian here on file servers and as primary machines.
