Some of us (OK me!) have Extreme Rapid Sphincter Muscle Light
Sensitivity Syndrome, which roughly means under certain lighting
conditions the iris (or pupil) is constantly constricting or dilating.
The effect is akin to trying to read using a strobe light flashing at a
rate 20-30 times a second (do not try this for long it's very
annoying).

Under the 'proper lighting condition' I see the blades of a running
ceiling fan (medium speed setting) as they rotate as a series of still
pictures. And yes, watching some older movies (B&W 1920/30's) is the
same. Watching television or viewing a CRT monitor running at 60Hz with
fluorescent lighting for some time (2-4 hours) is annoying and can
(usually does) result in a low grade headache.
