Round about the 2.4.20 kernel, NTFS read-only support has been an
option. Just ensure that the appropriate module has been compiled, mount
the file system correctly, and you're done.

Round about the 2.6.1 kernel, Captive NTFS has been supported allowing
for read/write to NTFS. Once again, the appropriate kernel module is
required and some support files, and it should be good to go. I have not
had much experience with writing back to NTFS, as I don't have much need
for it. The way I get around is to partition a small VFAT section, which
Linux has no problems writing to, and WinXP has no problem in reading.

Since Microsoft don't support anything but NTFS and VFAT, you won't have
much success reading Ext2/3 or ReiserFS from your WinXP OS. You could
always just partition a small VFAT partition where you can pass files
back and forth.

Sorry I can't be a little more Ubuntu specific, but I'm guessing the
Ubuntu Linux kernel has the NTFS read support compiled into it as a
minimum... not sure about the Captive NTFS support...
