In 20+ years of using one flavor of *nix or the other I have never seen
anything like this. Every morning, between 7:30am and 8:00am PDT my
linux box at home power off without any warning. It does *not* crash,
it simply powers off on its own. Just like you were removing the plug
from the wall.
On this box (P4@2.4GHz, ASUS P4s533-mx mobo, 1GB ram, 400GB disk see
dmesg below) I am running a box where I have installed a stock Fedora
Core 3. I run a httpd, sendmail, named, squirrelmail, ntpd, sshd
servers for my own domain. I am running iptables and have a Linksys
hardware firewall towards my DSL line. The box has it own dedicated
UPS. This system configuration used to run for months without any
single glitch.
I checked the temperature of processor, memory, power supply and seem
to be fine. I checked the voltages on the power supply and they are
fine. This happens whether I am working on the system or if the system
is sitting there. I have saved for 24 hours the output of tcpdump and
I have not noticed any suspiciuous activity. If during the day I set
the clock before that time range (say it is 5pm and I set the hw and
sys clock to 7:30am) the system after a while powers off. Anacron and
atd are stopped and I checked all cron files.
I am getting close to exhausting all my options of what to try next and
I was wondering if anybody had ever seen anything like this and had any
suggestions on how to nail down what is making the system go down. At
this poing I don't even know if it is HW related or not!
Thanks.
Paolo
