difference between /lib and /lib/1686

    hi

     I am trying to identify what is the difference between /lib/* and
    /lib/i686/* in standard linux Red Hat installs.

    Particularly libc.so.6 in both these directories have the same name but
    differ in size.

    Can some one point me to documentation or explain why these 2 libs
    exists ?
