I have absolutely no idea. I use Gentoo where everything comes in source
form so I always have the source to my running kernel installed. After a
kernel I upgrade I just boot without starting X and

# emerge nvidia-kernel
# modprobe nvidia
# /etc/init.d/xdm start

and I'm good to go. :-)
