1) I believe Windows browses the network as "guest", so make sure you
have a "guest" account in linux and that "guest" (and maybe "nobody"
too) is allowed acess in smb.conf.

2) Even if you can't browse the network from the XP box - and there are
good reasons for setting it up that way - your XP box can still access
an allowed share with

        \\192.168.1.15\sharename

Here, replace the IP address with your Linux box IP address, and
"sharename" with the share name. If your PC has DNS through the Linux
box, or otherwise, you can use the Linux box name instead of IP address.

3) You will need encrypted passwords and also to set up smbpasswd (add
the user and set password to same as on XP box). "Or something like
that".

4) The XP box and Linux box are in the same, private subnet, right?
What are their IP addresses? If you can print I assume that's OK.

5) If you try to access the share name as above and cannot get in, look
at the Samba logs. They will log the access attempt and tell you -
sometimes - what the problem is.

The other advice you got about testing your samba setup is good. Do
that first. One of the above is usually what I screw up :-)
