Yes, typically, higher resolutions operate at lower
frequencies. It's very common to see a monitor that
operates at 800x600 @75Hz to operate at 1078x768 @60Hz.

Go to /var/log/
You should find either an XFree86.0.log or
Xorg.0.log there. The log will tell you everything
you could conceivably want to know about your video
card, what it's capable of, how it's configured, etc.
