My two cents: it's usually good to start by booting a 'live CD' such as
Knoppix - this will boot and run from the CD without any installation. If
you like it, you can later install it from the same CD. Then go to
www.distrowatch.com and try to learn a little about what's going on.
Distrowatch also has a 'hit list' of the distributions having the most
activity - pick one of the top ten or so any you won't go far awry. I'd
also suggest you install several distributions before you commit to one -
see what you like and don't like about them.
