No Icons

I've just upgraded my Ubuntu install to the latest and I'm having a
problem. The desktop is missing icons. The
'show desktop' icon is a little x, the rubbish bin icon is gone. And the
file icons aren't right. I sometimes saw this before the upgrade, but a
re-boot would usually fix it. I don't know if it's complicated by the
fact that I often use a remote X terminal.
