First of all you chose a great distro - I have been using VL for 2 years.
Very fast, very nice. You did not say what version you installed? I assume
VL 5 SOHO or VL5 standard? If so VectorLinux uses a Slackware-based
package management system called "slapt-get" to automatically retrieve and
install new software. You can also use a GUI version of slapt-get called
gslapt. You need to run those programs as root as they are altering system
directories.
May I suggest you visit the VectorLinux forums:
http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum
In the HOWTO section you will have most of your questions answered. There
is a good HOWTO on slapt-get there and on using glsapt. You can use these
programs to see whether there already is a package built for those two
piceces of software you want.
Re your memory stick I would ask that question at the VL forums.
