redhat7.3 stuck on boot enabling swap space

Hi,

My Machine is a
    1. IBM Thinkpad X22
    2. running redhat 7.3 (kernel 2.4.22)

I have been using this (old) machine for the last 4 years without a
hitch. suddenly, today the machine got stuck during boot while it was
enabling swap space: it gets stuck by saying

enabling swap space:
Yenta IRQ list 06b8, PCI irq11
socket status: 30000410
Yenta IRQ list 06b8, PCI irq11
socket status: 30000006

any help will be appreciated.
