You could always try WebMin, this is a web based bunch of scripts that gives you a graphical tool for most administrative tasks that runs on Apache (or it's own mini-webserver)
Some people will say it is crap, but if configured correctly it's a good tool for beginners IMO..
About your book/course. Try: http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz
This one is pretty OK though, to learn you some things about scripts, and the Linux/Unix way in general. There is also a piece about bind in it if I recall it right :-)
But for most (specific) issues it's best you Google, and in many cases you'll stumble upon some sort of turorial/guidelines.
