Considering switch to linux

Hi,
Wondering if anyone can give me some advice. Just now I have two
computers my main one has Windows XP installed and the other one ( a
laptop) is just a messing about machine where I try new things before
installing it onto the main desktop.
The main thing about Windows I don't like is the fact that after say
3-4 months of it being installed it, everything seems to start running
slowly and you have to reinstall it again and also it seems to crash
quite a fair bit. I've been mucking about with some of the linux
distros on the laptop and tried some of the live CDs on the main
desktop and everything seems to work fine. No hardware problems or
anything. But there is a few things I would like to know before
installing it onto the main desktop.
1) does linux slow down like windows after time?
2) there is a couple of software packages that I just can't find good
replacements for on linux (i.e. Newsleecher - it's only the NZB support
I need. A good video conversion program that can handle various formats
i.e. AVI/MPG/VOB etc.. )
If anyone can offer some advice on this I'd appreciate it a lot.
Best Regards,
Graeme
