malloc error?

I have an old xfig file that when I open it in xfig i crashes and gives the
following error (I am using Eletric Fence to diagnose the error):
mos@ubuntu:~$ ulimit -c unlimited
mos@ubuntu:~$ export EF_ALLOW_MALLOC_0=1
mos@ubuntu:~$ ef xfig
Electric Fence 2.1 Copyright (C) 1987-1998 Bruce Perens.
ElectricFence Aborting: free(b4ffeff8): address not from malloc().
mos@ubuntu:~$
How do I fix this error?
