Linux doesn't have a registry to bloat. You are running into a
monolithic "registry" file that just keeps getting bigger whenever you
install data on your pc. This is equivalent to text files in linux, held
in the /etc directory. There are /etc configuration files for each
program, and organized into few directories. All of your programs that
you have installed are not on one text file, as it is with windows. Bill
Gates did this on purpose to *** you over and not let you touch his or
your own software. I'm not kidding, he's a sick ***. Windows is designed
to break from use.

http://www.bnr2.org/ as was stated before, also the previous post with
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/sourceforge/n/nz/nzbget/nzbget-0.2.3.tar.gz
was a nice lead. I've never used that.

Let me be honest with you here though. Newsleecher has no competition at
this time even on Winblowz platforms because they have that super-search
option, and they can handle file headers in the millions without a sweat.

It is a very efficiently coded program with a semi-database backend for
sorting. Pan needs 1 GB of RAM for every 1 Million headers. Binary News
Reaper is more efficient, but still not as fast as Newsleecher- or able to
handle that heavy a load.

Thus far linux newsreaders that have been developed were made for
this-----> text, not downloading 50 GB's per hour. I wish it were
different, but it is what it is. If you have to load alt.binaries.dvd at
8 Million headers, you had better use Newsleecher. You could of course
load windows Vista or XP or whichever in VMWare on the linux box, and run
it. If that's a must have, then this is a way around it for now. And
VMWare 5.5 workstation works exceptionally well for this.

Linux can handle more file formats and their conversion than windows. I
will take the Pepsi challenge any day on that blasphemous statement. The
ease of use for major file format conversions are very nice looking. Here
are some video conversion utilities I know of off the top of my head:

GMencoder
Konverter
ProjectX
Tovid
Kavi2Svcd
Kmenc15
Avidemux
QDVDAuthor
Video-DVDRip
GOPchop

Mplayer/Xine can handle playing any video file format and most audio
formats. Xmms/Amarok handles every audio format and most video formats.
Pretty soon I reckon we'll have just one player to rule them all, and in
the dorkness bind them.

So, those are my suggestions. One last and most important suggestion.
Buy Suse 10 and install KDE as the default GUI. It's the closest mirror
of Windows and has an excellent set of features that won't have you
looking back ever again. Everything else can build up from there once
you get it installed and configured to your liking. Good luck.
