Re: Considering switch to linux

Hi Dan. The best advice I can give is if you don't have the time to point
out how what I observed is not true, then it's best not to say anything at
all.

The three points I mentioned were ...

1. I see that some programs for KDE on my system work under the Gnome GUI as
well. I saw this with my own eyes, the KDE based browser Konkeror(sp) worked
under Gnome and appeared in the menu without my having to put it there. No
amount of telling people that they do not have a clue will change the fact
that under at least Ubuntu, some KDE programs automatically install in both
Gnome and KDE when both gui's are installed.

2. Font files under Ubuntu, Slackware, Fedora Core 4, appear under links
named X11.

3. These same fonts are referenced in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the
/var/log/xorg.0.log file. Xorg is not KDE, but is a software used by both
KDE and Gnome. When I make a change to xorg.conf, such as when I entered the
horizontal and vertical sync rates for my monitor and entered the valid
resolutions for my Samsung 213T monitor, this effected both the display
properties of KDE and Gnome. The NVIDIA settings I out into Xorg.conf
effected the graphics performance of screensavers in both GUI's.

Therefore, fonts, display drivers and other specifications in xorg.conf are
used by BOTH gui's.

No amount of belittling will change the default location of these font files
or the joint usage of xorg.conf by these gui's in slackware 10.2 Fedora Core
4 or Ubuntu 10.0 Breezy. Belittling does not change reality.

In view of these facts, it does not seem unreasonable that perhaps if one
program for KDE runs under Gnome, than the font one might as well especially
since the fonts seem to be handled and specified by Xorg not KDE or Gnome.

Perhaps the KDE font program I was referring to might not run under Gnome or
might even cause damage, but it seems that the location of the fonts as to
where they are stored, and referenced from indicates that my suggestion
might have worked.

It would have been better for you to have explained that the program simply
does not work under Gnome or that it would cause damage and why. This would
have been a far better thing. I would have learned something that I could
pass on to others to help them not make the same assumption, but instead all
I have learned is the names two folks here who behave like they believe that
belittling is a valid teaching tool, but are not interested enough to inform
the ignorant as they are in making themselves look smart by pointing out how
stupid other folks are.

I do agree with your sentiment about not wanting to pass on bad advice, I
have done that at times and have even replied to my own posts warning folks
away from following my advice when I had found a far easier way moments
later.

This is why I do not make such comments as you refer to as clueless lightly.
I had a sufficient base of observation to be relatively sure, that perhaps
the advice might work and little or no evidence that it would cause harm.

My mistake was that I trusted that there would be those where who would be
mature enough to say, no sorry, it don't work, and leave out the
belittlement part.
