Ipod using linux?

I have never used any ipod and don't know anything about them at all. I do use mp3 files with a portable usb mp3 player though. A friend who uses linux is asking about an ipod (nano) (and suse 10) - what is the current situatuioion please? Anyone using an ipod with linux? itunes seems to be the mac/doze software, and i have not heard or seen linux mentioned, even in groups about this. Is it really just down to mp3 with fat folders and files via usb?
