I've been using gtkpod with a 40g ipod with very good results. Please
tell your friend to first read the howto about mounting the ipod's file
system. I made a rather stupid mistake before I read the howto and before
I setup /etc/fstab and gtkpod to automatically do its mounting thing.
I think gtkpod is one of the nicest music management things I've found of
late. I use Debian but I am reasonably sure a SuSE 10 rpm package exists
for it as well.
Its not really down to simply mp3 files, usb and fat folders. The ipod
maintains a database of some sort which can get corrupted and music must
be copied in a specific way. Therein lies the problem I had once. I was
manually mounting the ipod's file system in linux and managed once to
simply disconnect the ipod before unmounting it. Not a good thing and I
corrupted the ipod's database quite completely. Its much better to read
about how to use gtkpod to mount/umount the ipod.
After that, it all works great!
