Do that - and loose whatever you put on it. Most likely sooner than later.
In my experience, when a drive starts having errors, the best way to
recover data is to use dd with the conv=noerror conv=sync to copy the
partition to a file on reliable media. It can then be loop mounted and
read without further deterioration.
I second that.
If your ramblings haven't toasted your warranty, go get another drive. Do
whatever you want with the new one, but don't blame your failure to take
warning of the very clear cries for help that your drive gave you on the
OS. Only one to blame here - the IBM - also known as "Fault 60".
I tried the dd thing already as soon as i had fsck start craping out, the
process gets to a point and then just sits there without proceeding, and
the HD light sits red, at this point my system log starts spewing out ad1
failure errors. The drive is obviously very fried so im just going to mail
its ass back to Maxtor for a replacement, as i said its brand new.
Besides, getting the data out of it was more of a experiment than something
i cared for.
Thanks anyway.
