Re: choosing a distribution

Yikes, with the installation/distribution process as it is, it's no
wonder that Linux isn't as popular as something like Windows. I'm
definitely not trying to start an argument that I'm sure has been had
many times before, but honestly, if a user doesn't even know which
distribution to choose, out of very many options, and then furthermore
doesn't even understand all there is to know about installing it, Linux
will never be more than power-user OS (it seems to me).

Anyway, I'm always eager to try non-MS things, so I still would like to
give this a shot. Since there will always be different opinions on which
dist. is the best/most user-friendly/etc., let me just ask another
question: what are the real differences between the distributions? What
separates SuSe from Mandrake, for example? Or Debian, Red Hat, etc. etc.
etc.

Thanks.

If you'd never had a car in your life would you go: "What's the
best car? I mean the car for me? I want a car to stay with, I
won't change it later, I don't want to."

You would get a few different answers from people who would think
you question was worth answering.

Then you would go: "OK, what are the differences between the cars?"

It's not really that simple.

There are so many different cars not only because they make them
for different purposes but also because people like them
different, even different colors.

On the other hand would you like them to manufacture only one
make and model? Then obviously it would also be the best one,
huh? I don't think the cars would be more popular if they only
came in one color.

Sure an operating system would be the choice of everybody if
there were no options and everybody would need one.

But it's not the case.
