Re: choosing a distribution

Hi everyone. I am interested in trying out Linux, but the obvious
problem is that I'm overwhelmed by the choice of distributions. Can
anyone recommend one that is good for general purpose usage, but
preferably one that I can stick with (not something to 'learn' with, and
then move on to another version). I'd also like to use one that is
fairly popular and well-supported, but I don't know which is which.
Obviously Red Hat is a big name, but at their site they seem to focus on
enterprise versions, which seem too big for me.

Thanks,

John,
I would make two recommendations for your consideration.

1) Try a few live CDs from some of the major distros
The advantages of using a Live CD is that it will give you a decent
look-n-feel experience without an actual installation. You can "try" out
several different flavors this way before committing to any.
Some of the better (IMO) Live CDs available are:
Knoppix: http://www.knoppix.org/
Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/
Kanotix: http://kanotix.com/index.php?&newlang=eng
PCLinuxOS: http://www.pclinuxos.com/
Suse:
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/suse_linux/index.html

2) Install Ubuntu and don't look back. It is very stable, very well
supported and the community on-line is second to none. The user forums are
better than most commercial software's tech support.
