Backup software - tape seek?

Hello, I'm trying to find some backup software for Linux. I'm
currently using Tapeware, but its not working with hardware compression
on my tape drive so its got to go.
Let me explain my situation. I would really like to be able to just
use tar and bash scripts, but unfortunately, tar doesn't support fast
tape seek, so restoring just a single file that some idiot (admittedly
myself in some cases ;) ) deleted takes hours. Tapeware solves that
problem, but full backups become a nightmare because of the previously
mentioned issues regarding hardware compression(I'm spent a while
trying to figure this out, everything looks right but its not backing
up anything over 12GB on a DDS3 tape). I'd really prefer to stay away
from anything that's massively complex like Veritas NetBackup(or
Symantec now I guess). If at all possible, something open source or
atleast free-as-in-beer would be nice. Arkeia looked like it might be
interesting, but the way they license their lower end software(by the
amount of data you backup :( ) really turns me off.
I've looked around a lot and haven't found anything open source that
supports fast tape seek. Is there some project somewhere that I've
missed? If not, then what commercial stuff would you guys recommend?
Thanks,
Oliver
