If you're just interested in exploring Linux, I'd recommend you start by
booting several of the Live CDs that are available. They will boot and
run
from the CD without touching the hard disk. No partitioning or
installation needed. My favorites: Knoppix (also a Live DVD is available)
and Elive.
Thanks for the suggestion. I did try that with Ubuntu and Kubuntu, but
running from the CD is very slow that I don't feel like I'm getting the
real experience of actually using it as an OS as I would normally.
That's right... a harddrive install runs *considerably* better than a live
CD.
As posted elsewhere: be sure to back up all your data first...
just in case there is a problem
