Re: Linux, over hyped by the Linux community, discuss.

Personally speaking I have found SUSE to the best distro for my
needs as an alternative desktop OS to Windows.

I use Ubuntu myself.

I keep finding myself [...] having to use applications that to fair
are simply not ready for realise due to them looking up or simply
crashing every one out of fifteen times you open them, Konqueor Web
Browser is a classic for this.

Not in Ubuntu.

There are other things to add to the list like the Kb3 burning
software that sometimes just doesn't burn

No problem with Ubuntu.

painfully slow transfer speeds to my USB HDD

No problem with Ubuntu.

not to mention the life age it takes to boot up and shutdown.

That is an issue with my Ubuntu too. My GF's laptop can use hibernate,
and she boots Ubuntu in mere seconds.

The last straw for me though was when I tried to print off an
envelope in OO and the address kept printing in the top left had
corner and then only part of it.

Sure, and OpenOffice.org really is Linux-specific.

I'm not sure how many version of Linux there are

There is only one.

I did here here were in excess of thirty six.

That would be distributions.

Why we need so many versions is beyond me.

There are many distributions because people have specific needs, and
make a distribution for that specific need.

If you had thirty six different versions of XP it would become
almost unsupportable, so why do it with Linux?

Because I don't have to support 36 different Linux distributions
either. RedHat only has to support a few. Canonical (the company
behind Ubuntu) also only has to support a few flavours. SuSE only has
to support a few too. What are you whining about?

I think if the Linux community were to 'champion' one or possibly
two versions that they could really be honed to make them virtually
bug free.

One or two? What about the Linux running on my PDA? I don't want to
run a full Gnome or KDE desktop on that, do I?

What is more if you have a stable and reliable platform then I think
the hardware vendors might possibly be willing to write drivers that
fully work like the Windows versions.

There are plenty of hardware vendors that either supply their own
drivers (like HP and nVidia), open up their specs so that people can
write their own drivers, or simply use open standards for their
hardware, so that it works with existing drivers (like USB sticks and
photocamera's). To get your hardware supported in Linux, you can
choose between those things. The best thing is, if you opt for opening
your own specs or using open standards, the hardware vendors don't
have to do anything - people will write the drivers for them for free.
