Newbie-ish: Building a HTPC with MythTV. Asking for some tips.

Hello,

I am experimenting with MythTV on Fedora Core 4.
Using some spare hardware I managed to build a basic
MythTV playback PC:

- P4 1.6 Gz
- 512MB ram
- 32MB TNT2 card.
- Aureal Vortex Soundcard (Monster MX-300)

So far, I have been disappointed with its performance.
Just the generally usability is annoying slow, even without
using a LIRC remote (ie via keyboard). My modded
Xbox TV box is much faster to use.

Using linux itself is OK (nothing flash but ok).

Are there any linux (FC4) specific optimisation tricks
anybody can recommend?

- I have turned on DMA (why doesn't FC4 do this by
default!?!?!) in rc.local. Not sure how to turn this on
sooner, if possible.
- Firewall and SELinux are off (private network only
anyway).
- This is only going to be a TV box and nothing else.
So I don't really need anything other than the stuff that
MythTV uses.
