Couldn't shutdown

Last night, I had a problem with my Ubuntu box where it wouldn't shutdown
without forcing it to(reboot -nf). I think a script in the shutdown phase
actually hung. Is there a way to know what hung? I looked a top, and it
showed only one process running. I think my problem started when my USB hub
stopped working.
