The basic things that people use a desktop for work very well, solid and
secure:

The Firefox browser is excellent, on windows or Linux. IE has been
standing still, Firefox is moving forward.

I use Thunderbird, on windows and Linux. Another excellent application.

OpenOffice Write works fine for me, although my needs are pretty basic.
It's not as compatible with MS Word as I would like, but the Open Document
standard is far, far superior to what MS offers.

Acrobat reader runs on Linux.

poor and often
lacklustre hardware support

Maybe not as good a support as for Windows, but I wouldn't go so far as to
say poor and lacklustre. Hardware support for Linux will improve as more
people use it. But I've never had any real problems with it.

fine as a web server

Superb as a web server. It amazes me that people actually use Windows and
ASP when there are far superior alternatives.

poor as a desktop OS,

Linux has come a long way on the desktop in the last couple of years. In
my opinion, it's still not quite there yet, but it's getting very close.
I use Ubuntu and XP, and there are lots of things about Ubuntu that I
prefer over XP. The nagging little problems in Ubuntu will be gone soon.
I doubt I can say the same for XP.

People knock Windows, but I think that MS has done a pretty good job of
providing an intuitive and stable user interface that mostly just works.
Too bad the underlying architecture is so poor. But Linux GUIs have been
steadily moving forward.

not quite as secure and immune to viruses and worms

Rubbish, that's one of the main advantages of Linux. I can browse the web
and open email without worrying at all. Security is a never ending
problem with Windows. I can't think of how many times I've had to
re-install Windows because of some virus or malware.

the OS of choice for
paranoid anti capitalist anti conformist geeks,

It's certainly becoming more main steam. And hey, what's wrong with
being a paranoid anti-capitalist non-conformist geek? :-)

the Linux community are
often in complete denial with regards to the competition.

There's some truth in that. Windows is a very user friendly and usable
interface. And it's a lot more stable that it's often given credit for by
the Linux crowd.

But Linux on the desktop is fast becoming a viable alternative.
