Have you tried the NO ACPI selection, it could be the power management being a problem. I have and old toshiba tecra 8000 that runs flawlessly including sound and wireless with SuSe 10 albeit slower than the 7 year itch. Course with a 350mhz processor you wouldn't expect anymore than that.
