The /etc/fstab has to define a partition for mounting. If the
system has existing scsi or sata drives the flash drive will
have to be set accordingly. On the other hand, for an IDE only
system the flash drive would be set to sda. Does that mean
that you can't prepare a flash drive for universal booting
as you can boot from a live CD?
