Hi all,
Firstly, I am by no means an expert in linux so feel free to point out
the "obvious" :)

I set up a ubuntu machine for my dad who is a 2 hour drive away from
me. I have optus cable so it works straight out of the box but he has
optus adsl and it doesnt work.

Is that a router or a "USB Modem"?

Using network-manager-gnome we checked the ip settings which all seem
to be good. An ip is assigned via dhcp in the 58.xxx range and the
primary and secondary dns servers seem fine.

What device is acting as the DHCP server?

The only thing I could find was that eth0 was not set as the default
gateway device which we did via the network settings panel.

You don't want a "gateway device" you want a gateway address - i.e. the
IP number that will be used to route all traffic that does not have a
specific route assigned to it.

Since you mention eth0, it looks like your dad **might* have a router.
If that is the case, then it is the router that should be set up with
the IP address from your provider. You should then have the router
allocate an IP address for your PC in the private range (usually
192.168.x.x). The lan-side IP of your router (often 192.168.0.1) then
becomes your default gateway.

Still we cannot ping google.com.au either by ip or by name.

Can you ping the ADSL device?

Any help greatly appreciated.
