Having said that, wouldnt setting eth0, (which has a valid ip) as the
default gateway device accomplish the same?
I don't think it's possible to set a device as default gateway. The
system needs to know which IP address (and from that the MAC address) to
send the data to. It's impossible to know the gateway IP address from
just the device name. Of course, you could start guessing that it might
be the lowest or highest usable IP in your range, or it might respond to
multi- or many-cast, but those aren't safe bets.
