It identifies me personally, based on my Linux login info, instead of
allowing me to specify a "newsgroup name". At least as far as I can see so
far. Wouldn't be the first time I missed something obvious.

I guess you're one of those who don't look (thoroughly) through the menus
before declaring something "doesn't work".

Try looking at the option called "Posting Profiles"...
