Yes of course it does. Windows 2000 which was practically identical to
XP in functionality never really caught on as a desktop OS. It was
little convenience features like these that made the difference.
Win2k was aimed at business users and it certainly caught on in that
environment. Every company of any size that I've worked for since Win2k
shipped moved from WinNT4 to Win2k. WinXP shipped only around 18 months
after Win2k. I don't think that that small timeframe (by MS standards)
helped with Win2k take up with some companies going to XP from NT4.
For home users, I would say it was cost rather than anything else that
prohibited their adoption of the OS. Back when Win2k came out it cost
around £250 over around £140 for Win98 (and later for WinME)(prices for
full OS, upgrade versions were available for less). Where OEMs offered
Win2k it was also at extra cost over Win98 (and later WinME). WinXP was the
first NT-based OS aimed at home users and XP Home is shipped by default by
OEMs so it's no wonder XP has caught on in the home as well as the office.
Had Win2k been aimed at home users and therefore shipped by OEMs for home
users I doubt those users would've said "I'm not using this because it's
asking me to type in a username and password instead of letting me choose
from a list". They'd have just got on with it.
FWIW;
XPoop comes in 2 flavors;Crap and ***..
* Crap version = XPoop Homey = Beavis and butthead = Half an OS = Pile
of crap
* *** version = XPoop Pro = Bozo the clown = Successor to Win2K
