Kdm does this on some distro per default, however it can luckily

If they are sitting infront of the computer, they could reboot the
machine in single user mode and reset the root password.
Why take the time if the user is already selected, just type in
the password from the small yellow post-it on the monitor. ;-)
I recently had one of my stand-alone systems (not using the central
authentication server) barf on the disk, and on rebooting, fsck discovered
file system inconsistencies and stopped at the "Enter the root password
and run fsck manually, or press Control D to reboot" prompt. I haven't
logged into that box in months - how the heck am I supposed to remember
the password? My excuse is that it didn't have a monitor, so there was
no place for the yellow sticky note. And passing 'linux 1' to the boot
loader took me straight to a password prompt. I finally remembered to use
'init=/bin/bash' and fumbled my way in that way. I also later found
the password locked in the safe in an unmarked envelope. Ah well, it was
time to change the passwords on all systems anyway.
