Before anyone suggests something like adding another network card to
the gateway and having them on separate sub-nets, I can't do that.
Maybe not on different physical supbets, but what about different LOGICAL
subnets?
Um, it has been a while and I can't remember if I did this on Linux or some
other UNIX, but you might be able to set up eth0 and eth0:0 on the same
network interface cards, each configured to have a different IP address on
different subnets. Not sure if Linux routing could handle it.
On your gateway I assume eth0 is configured to be 192.168.40.7. So on the
gateway use the command
ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.41.7 netmask 255.255.255.0
Then configure boxA to be on the 192.168.40.0 subnet and boxB to be on the
192.168.41.0 subnet...
If Linux routing can handle it... As I said, it was a long time ago and I
don't remember if it was Linux, so I don't know if it will work, but its a
suggestion.
