I'm sure this is a BIOS issue, but I'd like a work around.
I have a Dell optiplex GX110 i810 733Mhz with 384MB dual booted with
WinXP.
I'm trying to install a slackware based distro using two video cards.
One card is the onboard variety and the other is a ATI based card by
Powercolor, a 32mb dual monitor card with dvi.
I install the OS without problem, but when I go to "startx" the video
goes out.
A 733MHz computer is fairly recent, and for these new-ish computers
there is always the option in the BIOS to switch video output to be
able to troubleshoot even minor display problems. Not to disable the
display, mind you, but to specify which one (AGP or PCI) gets to be
primary.
How does winXP work with it, like which one did it treat as the primary
display? WHat happens to winXP when you unplug the primary monitor's
VGA cable? THe second monitor still works and shows an image as if the
other display were still active right? For me that would be a
reasonable objective, for Linux to make it behave the same way, if not
better.
The ATI website also has an installer for Linux for certain cards, but
I think you'd have to get the display going first. Back then, when I
was troubleshooting, one brute-force method was making X recognize only
one display first, save that configuration, scrap it to start anew but
unplug the first display and connect the second one. In the end you
will have 2 working configurations that you can put together following
the steps in the xinerama HOWTO. I should also mention that there are
some ATI chips with built in xinerama, and ATI's installer willl let
you select clone or BigDesktop or even mirror modes. But again, first
things first.
