This is how my current Windows desktop operates (and it's very
non-microsoft-ish). I'd love to get my Linux installation working
similarly to this.
Not much new there, KDE3.x.x with SuperKaramba
http://www.kde-look.org/
http://www.kde-apps.org/
http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/ssuperkaramba.html
or you can wait for KDE4 which is supposed to be released in the last
quater of this year, here the SuperKaramba be built into KDE and get a
load of other eye candy added.
You can try Enlightenment too, the DR17 has a good deal of eye candy and
special effects, see at http://www.enlightenment.org/
Out over that you have a load of other window managers that you can tweak
to do what you want.
