Re: Thinking about a linux server

Actually configuring a server with Ubuntu and Debian is very simple
(in fact, Ubuntu for example has a GUI ethernet interface
configuration).

What has that got to do with the price of fish? Many modern
distributions have GUI interfaces to help with administration.

The OP was talking about a choice between Fedora and Ubuntu - although
no-one reading your article would know that since you didn't see fit to
respect netiquette and quote those parts of the article to which you
were responding. Fedora also has GUI tools for those who are too lazy
to do things any other way.

I undestand that package-driven distributions are very poor in the
security and flexibility issues

Just because Billy-bob Gates tells you that does not make it so.

If you reread the phrase, you will see what a ridiculous notion that
is - the fact that a distribution packages the programs and files that
you will need for a particular task does not mean that they are
insecure or inflexible.

The package driven distributions have a mechanism for addressing
security and bug fixes by providing patches for those packages.

I have a server [...] If I had a server I'll use my own
GNU/LINUX distribution

So you *have* a server, but if you did have, this is what you would do?
Right!

I'll definitively use at least 80% of the server compiled manually
so I have the latest versions everytime for security issues.

Compiling manually does *nothing* to ensure that you have the latest
version every time for security. If you have compiled from scratch,
where would you pick up security updates and bug fixes in a timely
manner? I know it *can* be done and people who do know what they are
doing can spend a lot of time screening CERT advisories and other
announcements to locate which vulnerabilities will affect their system.

The above text is just a recommendation from someone with almost null
knowdledge about internet security and servers,

It shows
