Is anyone else having this problem? or what am I doing wrong?

What you're doing wrong is using Thunderbird for newsgroups. It's a great
email program (I use it), but it absolutely SUCKS for Usenet.

Full ack! TB is pretty poor as newsreader.

I recommend you give Pan or Knode a look. I prefer Pan.

Knode seems to have the same problem if you start it remotely but
it is although running localy. Dunno if 'pan' handles such
situations better.

Lately had a look at 'xmove' but it didn't work out of the box
moving a running X app to another X session, guess I have to dig
deeper into it. ;-)

The OP might like to take a look at our weekly stats, to see what
others are using. Keeping in mind, it isn't always the best
choice what many people might use...

Personally prefer 'tin'. For whatever reason most newsreader
prepend empty lines with a quoting character on reply. Makes
things looking pretty poor after a few replies. Already mapped a
short command in .vimrc to get rid of the stuff with a single
keystroke, since I can't be bothered to put more work into it.
;-)

BTW
Do you know about some TB plugin that works. Firing up an editor
such as vi(m) (as if there would be another), which would be
really helpful?

Thanks all for the input. Since I have been using Mozilla since the early
days of Netscape and since I have had no problem with Debian's old and
stable 1.7.8 and since I don't use KDE, I think I'll just go back to
Mozilla. I need the browser/email-news reader and the WYSIWYG web editor,
perhaps I'll upgrade to Seamonkey if the package ever makes it to Debian!
But in the meantime, I'll give PAN another try ( Now I know what PLONK
really means). Thanks again.
