unable to install/boot linux

I have used Linux for several years.
I have installed it on multiple computers and have used several
distros.

I bought a second computer for the kids to use.  It's a low-end
Compaq with 256k memory Sempron processor and 80gig HDD.

It simply refuses to bootup any distro of linux...including a
knoppix 4.2 live CD.

It gets past the usb ck and blinks and then it's done...no more signal

any ideas??

thx
