I don't think that my xconsole is as sophisticated as all that. I do
not
get options to set geometry in that manner with xconsole. man
xconsole:

I'll give you points for looking to see what is supposed to happen
before trying the command. But you aught to try the command for grins.

man X for xwidget controls

Oh duh! I see what I did wrong. <blush>

[ohmster@ohmster ~]$ man x
No manual entry for x
[ohmster@ohmster ~]$

Come on now. Just cut and paster the command Given.

man X

Yeah yeah, copy and paste would for sure have worked, try using an upper
case X instead of a lower case one. That is so stupid on my part.

That showrgb did show a big list of colors and that is pretty cool. No
need to go on about this, xconsole does work, it just does not seem to
be configurable like the one that you are using. I can still use it
though and will figure out a way to make it nicer as I need it.

That is why I gave you the fishing lesson. Just try the command

xconsole -geom 1032x50+400+00 -file /var/log/messages &

Yeah I will go over to the linux box, open up slrn, find this message,
then copy and paste the line and see what it does. On my way....
(Isn't that what the Travelocity roaming gnome says?)

(Dam, I gotta log all the way out since changing my NNTP server export in
/etc/profile. Okay, logging into server with slrn. Oh, I got my xface
shown now that I am really in X with slrn.)

Oh crap, I cannot copy and paste with slrn in a term window! Why not?
Hmmmm...
Wow, I really cannot do it. I will copy and paste into a text file, samba
it over, open it, and then copy and paste. There has to be a better way!

Ugh. I got an xconsole alright, "Couldn't open /var/log/messages". Okay,
let's su or sudo this one. Oh that worked! I got a really long width,
short height xconsole window. Crappy colors but it worked. Changing the
1032 to 900 fit my screen better. I am using 1024x768 on this moniter. I
want to get a nice 21" monitor for the Linux box but so far I have not
been able to get one. I found a nice one by the side of the road and was
going to repair it, I actually did put parts into it, many blown
capacitors and I had to special order the CRT driver IC, but the darned
thing blew up again and I am not going to order that $7 IC again. I threw
it out. I have an extra monitor in the kitchen, let me see what size it
is. Viewsonic E771, 17" monitor, same as the Envision EN-780 I have now.
This Envision monitor will do 1200x1600 nicely but the fonts are so
darned small that I cannot use it like that. Will stick to the 1024x768 I
have now until I get a larger monitor.

Let's change the display to 1200x1600 just to see it again, it has been a
long time...

Oh my, look at how tiny everything is! Sure is a lot of screen real
estate though. Man if these fonts weren't so gosh darned small, I would
for sure keep this screen res. Wow, your xconsole line looks really good
at that screen res too. God I wish I could keep this setting but I cannot
read the fonts, it is simply too small. Time to change it back again to
1024x768. I am for sure getting a 21" monitor for the Linux box, it is
simply way too cool to not have the best for it.

Yeah okay so it works. Now if only there were a way to get some nice
colors for it instead of that ugle black text on a white background. This
xconsole is really cool though. It shows all the system messages in real
time, right there in the short height box. Neet-O!

Okay so this is what I am using:

xconsole -geom 1000x50+400+00 -file /var/log/messages &

And it works nicely, but it starts too far to the right of the screen and
I have to move it over with the mouse to the left. It starts out 1/3 of
the screen over to the right and not near the left edge of the screen
where it should. Let me try to tweak it a bit. Here we go, this geometry
works good for me.

xconsole -geom 1032x50+7+00 -file /var/log/messages &

Now the colors and if possible, the font. How do you change the colors
on an xconsole window like this bit?
