Re: Can I change group and permissions on the messages file?

Please excuse the google groups. My free server won't let me post

My question is: Is it alright to change group and permission on the
messages file and will this change "stick" or will it be lost when the
log files rotate? What would you all suggest for me to do so that I can
view the messages file anytime, as a non-root user (Me only, not
everyone on the system.)?

Paul,
You should leave the permissions alone and just,
sudo xconsole -fg lawngreen -bg black -geom 1000x50+7+00 -file /var/log/messages &

If you're the only one in the sudoers list, only
you can use the sudo command.

Agreed, but then I have to put in a password all the time and I don't
think that would work if I try to call up the xconsole from the
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file like I am now doing and it works so
freaking well. I guess I could edit the sudoers file and make it so
that the xconsole command does not require a password from me, I will
give that a try rather than messing with system permissions. I really
would rather not change permissions like that on system files, who
knows what complications could result because of it. Good heads up,
Steve. Thanks.
