Re: Can I change group and permissions on the messages file?

Again with the google groups, sorry guys. :(

Paul,
You should leave the permissions alone and just,
sudo xconsole -fg lawngreen -bg black -geom 1000x50+7+00 -file /var/log/messages &

If you're the only one in the sudoers list, only
you can use the sudo command.

Agreed, but then I have to put in a password all the time and I don't
think that would work if I try to call up the xconsole from the
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file like I am now doing and it works so
freaking well. I guess I could edit the sudoers file and make it so
that the xconsole command does not require a password from me, I will
give that a try rather than messing with system permissions. I really
would rather not change permissions like that on system files, who
knows what complications could result because of it. Good heads up,
Steve. Thanks.

Just to let you know Steve, that using your sudo command to prefix my
xconsole command did work, I had to visudo the sudoers file to add
xconsole as a no password job for me and that did the trick.

First I reset the permissions and group on the messages file, then I
tried to open up xwindows. I got the xconsole but could not open the
messages file. Then I went and added the prefix "sudo" before my
xconsole command as you suggested in my /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file and
presto, I could start up x and use the regular permissions on the
/var/log/messages file and my xconsole works just fine. I do like that
a lot better than trying to Rube Goldberg my way around the
permissions. Great tip, thanks again Steve.
