Re: Can I change group and permissions on the messages file?

Hey bit!

I did see your rather long reply about how to write my own scripts. That
was some really good stuff but I am too worn out to address that right
now. I did save it, congratulations, you have your own directory now on
my computer for your very informative replies. I will get to that when I
have time and get back to you on it. Thank you for your time, Mr.
Twister. ;>)

Hey that rhymes, donought? "Mister Twister" I am a poet and don't even
know it. Well I'll be dammed...

You do mean "ls -la" right, and not "ls -al"? This is the second
message from you where I noticed this typo. Makes me wonder if it is a
typo or not.

Not, A good programmer will code as to not require global arguments to
be in a particular order, when possible.

It helps me to remember the arguments for what they do.
So I wanted to LiSt All in Long format hense ls -al
not list Long All as your "misspell" would suggest. :)

I just tried both, ls -la and ls -al, there is no difference, they
produce the same output.

You could use -Al if you like but I like to see perms on . and ..

Now in the /etc/cron.daily directory, all these files do exist so I
would imagine that one could edit, add, or delete files if one wanted
to.

Yep, during a clean install my admin diary would have
cd /etc/cron.daily
ln -s /site/bin/whatever_1
ln -s /site/bin/whatever_2
to add my cron jobs. Documenting your webmin method would be a pain
and slow down the install since I could not cut/paste webmin mouse
clicks. :-)

Agreed. Using a mouse to point and click can be cumbersome and time
consuming if you are just "cooking right along" with your keyboard.

I make an effort to not dink with system scripts where possible.
An update could wipeout my changes. The scrip change would also cause
an unnessary security audit entry which I do not want.

Speaking of dinking with system scripts and whatnot, didja see my reply
to Steve? He recommended not changing the permissions on
/var/log/messages and just using sudo to read the file. I had to list
xconsole as a non-password sudo file for myself but it works now and
there is no need to change the permissions on system files that way.
Isn't that just grand?

I do have a logrotate file in there. Let's see what's in it...

Does it look like something that can change perms to you?

Well there is no chmod 400 /var/log/messages :-)

See above reply. Also true that by calling up the xconsole with xinitrc,
I am sort of "killing a fly with a sledgehammer" just to get an xconsole
to pop up on my login to X. I would be better to put something like that
into a local file in my $HOME directory that would affect only me but
when I created an .xinitrc file there with only the line in it to call up
the xconsole, xwindows would not run anymore. I had to take it out. What
went wrong with that? Do I have to mirror the global xinitrc file to my
home dir and then add the xconsole command in order to get that to work
just for me?

I assume you are documenting what you are doing in your brand new
admin diary so as to not lose them on the FC5 install. ;-/

Dude, I don't even understand everything that you are talking about
although I do recognize good *** when I see it. I am copying these
messages to local files to bone up on when I need it and can digest it a
little better. An admin diary would be a nice touch but I really need a
beginner's guide to making and using an admin diary, sort of a mini-howto
file. Would you consider making one if you have the time and posting it
somewhere for the benefit of all to read? That would be soooooo kewl but
I don't want to put you to great trouble over this.

On the bright side, I did order the 200Gb drive from newegg.com tonight.
I get free 3 day shipping with it and if all goes well, I might just be
installing that shiny new Fedora Core 5 next weekend!

Thanks for all the help bit, and especially the one about script writing.
I really do want to sink my teeth into that one but will need some time
to get into that one. Besides, I will be installing FC5 real soon so it
may be better to just wait and get this one for the new system. I think
you said you had a working FC5 system too so that will be something that
we can talk about.

Goodnight buddy. :)
