I bought a Compaq Presario notebook, and am unable to resize the NTFS
partition in order to make room for Ubuntu. Partition resizers for
Ubuntu, Mandriva (ntfsresize), SimplyMepis (Qtparted) do not work, keep
giving error "ntfsresize failed", "Opening '/dev/hda1' as NTFS failed",
etc. The notebook PC has a single drive, /dev/hda that has an NTFS
67GB "C:" partition (used by WinXP) and a FAT32 8GB "D:" partition
(likely proprietary stuff for Compaq, rescue system, etc). I.e.
/dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2 as seen by linux.
What happens if you try to open /dev/hda instead of /dev/hda1 ?
I would like to split the hda1 partition in half for WinXP and Ubuntu.
I am at a loss at what i can do to preserve the existing WinXP with
proprietary drivers for the notebook. Am I forced to wipe the drive
clean, partition it, put Ubuntu on it, and hope that a WinXP
Professional installation will work with the laptop? (I have a WinXP CD
that I can install to pretty much any PC that I got from my college).
There may be a driver issue when you install the microsoftXP, you may lack drivers for the touchpad, wireless and additional keys on the keyboard (media buttons), but otherwise it should work.
I did make rescue discs for the laptop (odd, the notebook did not come
with ANY discs, it is all done discless, I had to make my own rescue
recover discs from a system option, and was allowed to only do that
ONCE; wow, yet another reason to dislike Microsoft Windows).
This is a new thing from the notebook companies, to not include a media, but have the OS only on the harddrive and have you troubles, you need to download an installer from them and reinstall a fresh install that way (if you only have the notebook, then you are out of luck) or press F11 when you booted into your crashed microsoft.
All this for cutting down the cost with one buck (really less), myself I decided to wipe out the whole microsoft (never booted it) and installed GNU/Linux as the main and only OS on the laptop and buggering the notebook company to try to get some compensation for the unused license and of course forwarding their replies to EU as background material for one of the future cases against microsoft.
